Phone booths become WiFi hotspots in China
Sunday, 20 February 2011 00:00
The market of smartphones in China is oversaturated or is coming close to this point therefore China does need land lines any longer. They are actually fading away. Just for this reason, new ideas on recycling of old technologies come to minds with a view of present technologies. The Chinese government starts remodeling the public phone booths, which are entirely obsolete and are of no need any longer. They will be turned into Wi-Fi hotspots, which are so needed everywhere. In accordance with famous Asian tech blog Mobinode, one of the Chinese papers informed about the booths conversion. It may be surprising for you as well but this solution happened to be less costly for the government as their maintenance now or sending booths to be recycled.
In addition to the funds saving, which is good in itself, this project contributes to bigger expansion of WiFI coverage. It lets Internet users to get access to the web easier.  It will become a great benefit for the development of 3G service in the country. Even with successful implementation of the project the phone booths will make only 1% of future expansion as the source reports. There are going to be Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the country and first of all they will be installed in public places such as hotels, restaurants, gyms and so on. Therefore this is just a beginning.
Certainly, elimination of public phones will be good for mobile phone owners, while people without cell phones will find it hard to find means of communication. They will feel greatly deprived and have limited communication access. Still the fact that the current situation looks like throwing needed resources down the drain is indisputable. We may argue with it but land line telephone booths turn into archaic element of the present day means of communication. As the majority of population is going to win from it, people in China will enjoy even more enhanced Internet connection thus expanding their web presence.
