Google is bad for our brains
Wednesday, 22 September 2010 03:59

As even search engines are optimized for the convenience of users, people start losing their capacity for intellectual thinking. This is the opinion of Nickolas Carr, the authot of the book «The Shallows». He considers that Internet and Google in particular is damaging for our brain and development.

Brain is an organ that should be practiced every day because regular workouts are essential for it. But Internet becomes the place where people do not need to concentrate and web developers try hard to make everything easier for users. Here is the dilemma comes into view. On the one hand people spending much time online need something complicated for use to stay in shape so to say. On the other hand software designers and programmers need to sell the product and try to please the customers’ tastes. This talk was activated in connection with the recent Google Instant launch, which inserts the words you may need at the point of typing. The author expressed his admiration addressing Google Inc, but at the same time called the company the one with narrow views on such things as the use of brain. The emphasis on efficiency is not exactly what people need. Google Books were also criticized for the lack of involvement into the long narrative as they should do. He also said that fast answers to all questions are bad for our intellectual growth.
