TheBBC needs to reduce its budget on web as part of saving measures taken by the organization. These actions referring to BBC Online were expected, but nobody knew about the size of these cuts. One can find the skills site Raw among the casualties, alongside with the websites for teens Switch and Blast, Video Nation, which is the documentary site, and the community site 606. Mark Thompson, the BBC director asserts that BBC Online has tremendous success, but not all its websites meet the expectations of the company. For this reason the priorities were refocused and the company decided to pursue the supreme quality of the product to prepare the company for the transformation. The company needs to be ready for the streamlined work and other demands of the future. Besides, BBC made an announcement about different focus of famous iPlayer that will stop supporting radio and will be changed to television channels mode.
All these things are going to be implemented in the course of 2 years. 180 websites of the company will be shut down this year and the rest during the next year. But the reductions in the company did not involve only web presence, World Service division also has to decrease the number of jobs, nearly one forth of all people working for the company – about 650 jobs. |
