Russia Building 10-Petaflop Supercomputer

Believe it or not, accordit-platformsng to the data collected from a popular antivirus company, 50% of the world computers have been infected with at least one malicious script in the first month of 2012.

When it comes to the most harmful malware issues, the trojans caused most of the incidents, closely followed by the traditional viruses and worms. According to the same statistics, Russia and Turkey occupy the top positions in a chart with the most “infected” countries. Over 50% of their computers are infected. It sounds pretty hard to believe, especially since Russia is currently in the charts of the most advanced computers ever built.

T-Platforms Group is one of the largest corporations in Russia. It was established in 2002 only, but with a huge investment. Over the years, it managed to gain an international fame. It provides advanced software and supercomputing services all over the world, but especially in Russia. T-Platforms Group represents the premier options for all the large corporations interested in using the HPC technology, but without the actual resources to benefit from a supercomputing system. The company plan starts with a comprehensive study in order to detail the customer's requirements and goes on to developing some of the most impressive computers. The company is headquartered in Moscow, Russia.

The official board of directors of T-Platforms Group has recently announced the plans for a supercomputer for the Lomonosov university in Moscow. The announcement came in the first days of 2012 and the project is already moving on. With such a competitive device, Russia indirectly claims its right in the race for Exascalar systems constructions. It is a restricted market only Japan, China, the European Union and the United States of America have access to. T-Platforms Group is well known in this industry due to the computer it built for the same university a few years ago. The previous “monster” had 1.3 petaflops to work with. The new project implies the construction of a 10 petaflop computer, which is amazing. According to the same officials, the computer will rely on Intel and Nvidia for the chips. The moment this announcement came out, the rumors showed up as well. Judging by some of them, the company may even use the upcoming MIC chip from Intel. Although it is not officially released yet, the chip is expected to be a boom in the industry. Since some people already ask themselves how this computer will work, the T-Platforms Group officials have simply covered this field too. It seems the monster will be chilled with water. It is so powerful that cold air might be useless.

 

Over the history, Fujitsu is the only company in the world that managed to reach the 10 petaflop barrier. The computer they designed is referred to as K Computer. The machine was built at Kobe, Japan. It was named after the Japanese word “kei”, which means 10 quadrillion. The amazing machine relies on around 80,000 nodes, not to mention about the unusual memory architecture. In the summer of 2011, in one of the most popular charts in the world, K Computer was ranked as the most powerful computer in the world. Back then, its rating was higher than 8 petaflops. By the beginning of winter, its power was increased to 10 petaflops, becoming the first machine to ever reach this limit. The power used by this computer is equal to the power used by 10,000 domestic homes.

In other words, Fujitsu successfully managed to open a door in the new era of technology. After the successful Japanese project, Russia is about to create a similar computer. However, such supercomputers are only the beginning of a new age. Although it will take years and maybe even decades to upgrade these machines to new levels, the scientists often dream about the Exascalar systems, which are known to provide a power of 1,000 petaflops. The construction of such devices implies new development methods for microprocessors, memories and data stocking environments. According to the T-Platforms Group specialists, Russia does have the power to develop these monsters. As a matter of fact, such systems might show up by 2018 to 2020. The Russians are ready to invest in this field.

Overall, it seems the world's largest country has more in there than just a lot of land. It is a successful candidate for the most powerful country in the world, regardless of the point of view you watch this situation from. With a 10 petaflop computer, the Russians will gain access to new technologies and a lot of extra power.
