Google is biased in search results
Saturday, 27 November 2010 15:28

Google seems still to be biased when the search results are delivered by search engine, because the company provides top billing in various searches.

It was noticed by Ben Edelman the analyst from Harvard Business School. Some items are treated inconsistently in search engine according to his opinion and match products offered by the company. He particularly noticed that with addition of comma to the search term the result is a bit different. For instance, about 2,600 terms which are related to health have top positions providing top billing to Google. But if you add commas to these terms they don’t remain on top.

The accusation of this kind was always denied by the company though Marissa Mayer, who takes the position of top executive in the company, said once that the company would be justified in case they put their websites first. But this time the practice was not even denied by London officials.

When the website is placed highly this is a great advantage over other results and while the top spot gets 34% of traffic and this is as much as spots from the second point to the fifth put together. It is also equal to the traffic acquired by numbers 5-20 combined, so simple arithmeticс demonstrates how profitable it is. This way Google can oust any business rival, giving preferences to its own resources and gaining benefits from them.
