If you have blues, there is a surefire remedy for you – the update of your profile in the social network Facebook. We often hear about Facebook threatening the privacy of users and it seems to us that this is the cause of tension, but we seldom hear good news about this resource and the positive consequences of Mark Zuckerberg’s product. According to the new study Facebook still has an advantage. People start feeling better about themselves when they use it. The study was performed by the experts from Cornell University and it has discovered that Facebook profile works like a mirror for people in which they are able to see themselves in the most favorable light and this makes them feel confident. The research participants were 63 students, who sat in front of the computers. Some computers showed profiles on Facebook, others were switched off and some students sat in front of the mirrors. The students with computers were allowed to open only their profile page and the content which is connected with it. After this test the students were asked to access their self-esteem.
The results happened to be unpredictable. Students who edited and updated their Facebook profile showed the best result, that is to say the biggest boost of self-esteem. Students with mirrors did not show such high results as mirrors show us who we really are and this tells negatively on self-esteem. The person is rarely satisfied with the way he looks.Jeffrey Hancock, the professor from Cornell University said in the press-release that the result of the research has nothing to do with deception, but it is rather a positive aspect of oneself. |
