Amanda Hocking managed to make millions thanks to Kindle |
Friday, 25 March 2011 00:00 |
The great success of novelist Amanda Hocking, a 26-year-old self-published author, became possible due to new approach to book publishing. When the author wants to achieve success, the contract must be concluded with the publisher. Hocking’s books became the author of the best-selling books on the Kindle store, and 100,000 books are sold monthly. In comparison with usual book deals, though, Hocking keeps an enormous 70 % of revenue selling her books, that is from $0.99 to $2.99 per item, while Amazon retains 30 %. It is easy to calculate that her earnings reach about $2 million annually — an incredible sum. Actually, no other publisher in the world is able to offer her better terms at present. Theoretically, every author is able to earn this way as well.
If one author can earn major cash without the help of a traditional publisher, then it’s possible for others to do so. Other authors also achieved success selling books online, for instance, J.A. Konrath, but the critics consider that they managed to do it because they were famous already. This will alter the situation in the publishing world. Amanda Hocking writes about adult fantasies. She also writes about zombies and vampires with romantic touch. This theme is popular now after the Twilight success, but this is not Amanda’s concern that her books resemble this hit. |
