Monday, 22 November 2010 22:24

SeySeychelleschelles Cable system chose Alcatel-Lucent and concluded $30 million contract with the company for construction of SEAS, standing for Seychelles East Africa System, which will connect the capital of Seychelles Victoria and the city in Tanzania, Dar es Salaam.

The archipelago in the Indian Ocean, which consists of 115 islands, will have direct high-speed access to World Wide Web thanks to optical fiber backbone. The SEAS is going to span 1,900 km.

The citizens of Seychelles had to use the satellite Internet before, which was expensive and not reliable method. Thanks to the new cable Internet will become more affordable, the level of life will be higher and the quality of service will be enhanced. Growing bandwidth demands will be satisfied at last thanks to scalability of submarine Alcatel-Lucent.

Africa remained traditionally the least connected but measures are taken to correct the situation. More and more projects are launched in this direction and the amount of submarine cable networks steadily grow. The number of connected areas increases as well as the quality of connection and total capacity, which was raised from 0.2 Tbit/s in the year of 2000 to 20.2 terabits per second.
