Wednesday, 04 May 2011 22:51
Google is always modifying its products and the same is referred to its search engine. The company seems to like to experiment, try various ideas and introduce new features.
Many little changes were launched without great fanfare, in spite of the fact that they influenced the users greatly. In the same way, Google doesn't make any commentaries on tests the service conducts.
One curious experiment discovered by users is a Google search enabled with voice input. Google has started lately launched Chrome 11 supporting HTML5 speech input API.
Google also demonstrated the functionality providing support for Google Translate, so it is not surprising that they started work over Google Search.
Users taking part in the experiment are able to see the same microphone icon, that can be found in Google Translate service. Google employs the same location to put a link to keyboard layouts for local versions of the search engine, which is used for languages with unusual Latin scripts or have different scripts.
As the speech input button goes live, the users will have an opportunity to click on it, on condition that a mic is connected to the computer. This way he can to speak the query.
This feature will be active in Google Chrome only because this is the browser that supports the API now unlike all the rest. Besides, only English language is available at the moment, though it will be adopted by a range of other browsers. Other languages will also be added soon.
In spite of the fact that voice feature is great, keyboard still remains to be the most popular. But when you are an owner of mobile device, that does not have a keyboard, its use looks more legitimate. Taking into account the fact that the tablets will run Chrome, therefore speech input will be of great importance.
